Overview of 2011 New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR
Hero Honda launched the much awaited tourer bike - Karizma ZMR in Indian Market in 2009 and it has been very well recieved by the Indian customers. Karizma ZMR is sold along with old Karizma model, Hero Honda has decided not to phase out Karizma R and sell both the models side by side. They don't want to end the competition with Apache 180 & Pulsar 220. The stance of Karizma ZMR remains the same as the old Karizma which is still considered to be the best touring bike in India with smooth, refined and relaxed Honda engine at the helm. The major and much needed change in Karizma ZMR was the addition of programmed fuel injection (PGM-Fi) in the engine. Additionally it also got disc brake at the rear, gas charged rear shock absorbers, little increase in power and torque.
Hero Honda is now Hero MotoCorp and the company revealed its new identity at a mega event in London, UK.
Now, Hero Honda has launched the 2011 version of Karizma ZMR which gets minor face-lift or you can say few cosmetic changes. The 2011 model features body coloured rear view mirrors, blue back-lit instrument cluster, new ZMR logo on the instrument cluster, body coloured split grab rail, re-designed silencer and heat sheild. The company has also added a attractive new shade "Vibrant Orange" to the color options of Karizma ZMR.
Fast Facts About 2011 New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR

- Is powered by a 223cc fuel injected engine
- Maximum power is 17.6 Bhp at 7000 rpm
- Maximum torque is 18.35 Nm @ 6000 rpm
- Is now available in four shades, blue and yellow has been discontinued
Design & Style Of 2011 New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR
In terms of looks the most visible change in ZMR in comparison to the Karizma R is heavy looking full front fairing with a lot of snazzy graphics with 'ZMR' stickers. Though it seems a little bit overworked and gives Karizma ZMR a plasticky look. The designers at Hero Honda 'R&D' must have been a fan of Suzuki Hayabusa!! As far as new features are concerned the New Karizma ZMR gets all new headlamps with integrated blinkers and new tail lamps which are now LED ones. The 2011 model of Karizma ZMR features body coloured rear view mirrors, new design for silencer and heat shield, body coloured split grab rail, blue back-lit instrument cluster, ZMR logo on the instrument cluster and all-new 'Vibrant Orange' shade.
The fit and finish is quite good, there are no panel gaps and paint quality is awesome. The rear view mirrors have been mounted on the front fairing a.k.a Yamaha R15, which is the best part of the facelift and it gives Karizma ZMR a very aggressive look if viewed from front. But the main problem is if you view the bike from side - the front doesn't gel with the slim looking rear. Hero Honda should have made the rear end a bit heavy to match it with the heavy front fairing. All in all, New Karizma ZMR looks much better than the outgoing model which started looking very outdated in comparison to the Yamaha R15, Bajaj Pulsar 220, TVS Apache RTR 180 & Honda CBF  Stunner Fi.
Instrument Cluster of 2011 New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR
The Intrument cluster is best looking part in Karizma ZMR. Insert the key and you are greeted with a long scrolling message which ends with "Bon Voyage Fly Safe". The display is full digital including the tachometer which has been designed in round shape under a horizontal digital display which looks very cool especially at night.  The 2011 model of Hero Honda Karizma ZMR features blue back-lit instrument cluster. It also features new ZMR logo on the instrument cluster.
The display also shows real time fuel consumption which is very helpful in maintaining good mileage. Other tell n tales include the speedometer, trip meter, fuel indicator, clock and rev counter. The switchgear remains the same and, in true Hero Honda fashion, there is no engine kill switch. The instrument cluster features dual colour illumination - the tachometer is lit in white while the rest gets an orange backlight.

Hero Honda has claimed top speed of 126 kmph and 0-60 km in 3.7 seconds in its official brochure but it is still slower than the current fastest bike in this segment - The Pulsar 220, which has top speed of 144 kmph. Also I expected much more power and torque from the altered Fuel Injected engine, Karizma ZMR should have been at least touching around 20 Bhp with 21-23 Nm torque.
The PGM-Fi system of 2011 model of Karizma ZMR is equipped with a 12 hole fuel injector, 16 bit ECU and 6 high-tech sensors to scan the engine operating parameters like air pressure, air temperature, and engine temperature to ensure the optimum air / fuel ratio under dynamic conditions. An advanced vertical oil cooler provides efficient cooling to the high performance engine and the IACV (Idle air control valve) ensures idle stability and smoothens response to throttle changes.

Shades Available in 2011 New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR
2011 model of Hero Honda Karizma ZMR is available in following four shades:
- Spot Light White
- Panther Black Metallic
- Candy Blazing Red
- Vibrant Orange (New Shade)
The 2011 model of Karizma is available in four shades: Spot Light White, Panther Black Metallic, Candy Blazing Red and Vibrant Orange (New Shade). The company has discontinued Yellow and Blue shade which were available in 2010 model.
Conclusion - Little Bit Overpriced in Comparison to Power & Torque Figures
Hero Honda's New Karizma ZMR comes packed with more power, more style and more aggression but the new model leaves us expecting for more!! Hero Honda should a lesson or two from Yamaha which had gone almost instinct in India in 2005 but with the launch R15, FZ-Series & Fazer they are back with a bang and grabbing the premium bike market share day by day. I may not have been biased towards Yamaha if Hero Honda had come up with a more powerful and better designed version of Karizma. Though Karizma has always been very popular among bike enthusiasts as it is a highly capable bike and it was expected that Karizma Fi will going to take it a step further. Let's see how Karizma fans react to the price, design change and will it set the sales charts on fire and will beat Pulsar, R15 & Apache.

Karizma R vs R15

Performance: Even though at the first glance Karizma seems to overpower the R15 in terms of displacement, the 150cc engine of R15 cannot be downgraded in terms of engine size alone. With a host of special features like liquid cooling, DIASIL cylinder and six speed transmission Yamaha R15 simply rocks. Ok lets not get too much into the details, lets analyze the feel…
I took a blue Yamaha R15 to the highways today. I was excited for sure. I did not bring my helmet with me, so I had to calm myself down from revving too much, but I couldn’t keep up. I pushed the engine upto 117kmph and it refused to go any further. I have heard many users that they have tried upto 140kmph, the fastest ever speed for an Indian bike, but I do not know what is wrong with this unit. The engine had clocked 2,000 kms so far. In Karizma I have pushed it upto 120kmph. While Karizma vibrates a little at that speed, R15 is like a rock, no vibration at all!
One thing that is clearly evident is that the riding position is far different in this bike. While you sit in an upright position in Karizma, R15 needs you to sit in a real sporty position. So what difference does it make? Well, you are 2-3 times more confident in R15 than in Karizma at such speeds. The aerodynamic sitting posture makes the difference. The air hits our chest at an inclination and escapes easily below our arms which reduces air friction. You cannot expect that in a Karizma unless you volutarily lean down which becomes a little uncomfortable. Regarding pickup, Yamaha R15 does not give me enough adrenalin as that of Karizma. If R15 had a 200cc engine atleast, this would have been taken care of.
Handling: There are big differences between these two bikes when it comes to handling. In Karizma you can easily manage the turns in the urban streets, the sitting posture is similar to other bikes and it is easy for you to take your foot to the ground to get your balance in case the bike slows down too much. This is very difficult in R15. The sitting posture requires you to fold your legs at an acute angle and have your foot a little higher than the other bikes, thus when you need to suddenly slow down for a sharp turn in the city road, it is uncomfortable to bring the leg all the way down. So if you are not going to use R15 much in the highways, then you will not get a good return on investment of your bike. Consider Yamaha FZ16 for exclusive urban commute. Karizma seems to manage both highway riding and city travel.
Comfort: Both the bikes are the flagship models of two big companies in India, so you need not worry much about the comfort. Eventhough the sitting posture is different in the two bikes, you can still have an ultra ergonomic posture. I have not found any particular uncomfort in the Karizma, but one tiny thing which bothers me in R15 is the gear shifting. Unless you are wearing a good shoe, it is very difficult to bend your ankles to shift up the gear if you are wearing leather shoes or casual sandals. I would advice you to notice this if you test R15.
Dashboard: Karizma features three units in the dashboard, the first one is the tachometer, then the speedo meter (analog) and the last unit has clock, fuel gauge, trip meter and ODO meter. In Yamaha R15, the speedometer is digital and tachometer is analog. The digital console also incorporates fuel gauge, trip and ODO meter.
Looks: I need not say anything about this. We all know that Yamaha R15 is the most gorgeous sexy bike ever. Since it is derived from the R1, there is no question of comparing it with Karizma. Perhaps in the near future, Hero Honda will clone CBRs and other Honda sports bikes, but nothing is for sure. Anyway even in the foriegn countries, Yamaha has always won the beauty competition. The only lack I feel in the R15 is the ultra thin bi-cycle like rear tyres. The tyres are well designed for performance, but broad tyres really give out that manly look which I feel is very important when the price of R15 is placed at Rs.1,00,000 plus.

Conclusion:
I cannot give a trophy to one of the bikes because I love them both and each do not compete directly with each other. Karizma is for the status, city ride and occasional high speed cruising. R15 is for pure biking enthusiasts who feel like heaven while cruising in the highways, that’s why Yamaha has given the additional 6th gear for R15. Go for Yamaha R15 if you accept that it is a little difficult to handle in sharp turns. Difficult in the sense, I mean it is not easy as Karizma. Go for the latter if you are a fan of Hero Honda and want ease in urban roads.
Even though this review is a good guide for you, when you are making a big invesment to buy such premium bikes, always drive it yourself and weigh your priorities. For some people, the stunning looks of R15 may be addictive and would buy them even they do not get a chance of riding in highways much and will later regret it. Focus on what you really want, is it status, looks, performance, ease of handling or pride of branding and choose the best bike for yourself.

KARIZMA Review 3

Hero Honda Karizma R Review

Appearance

Hero Honda Karizma R Right view Picture The engineers at the Hero Honda did all they can to give this machine a macho, international look. The front headlamp is a great job indeed and Hero Honda brings modern day superbike style to India with it. The other attractive feature is the perfect carving of the body and bold new graphics. Every portion of the bike is balanced as its tale is made in the right proportion of the tank. The company has kept with the times, and grafted an aircraft-type fuel filler cap onto the tank. Apart from these, there is a stylish under cowl.

The stylish console is high-tech with bright yellow background which make clear visibility in daytime too. The dashboard incorporated three dial shape meters. Large speedometer placed at the centre and rest dials houses tripmeter, fuel gauge and techometer. Digital fuel indicator makes it really a hi-fi technical bike. This is the first bike in various aspects like it has pre-installed alloy wheels. The bike has dual tail lamps that is first time introduced in the country. The rear suspension comes in a dash of red. Under the rear suspension, muffler is sparking with new heat shield in classy chrome finish. The front panels of the Karizma R are amazing.

Engine

Hero Honda Karizma R engine view Picture Karizma R comes with a 223cc single cylinder, air-cooled, OHC, four stroke engine that packs a maximum power of 17bhp at 7000rpm and maximum torque of 18.35 Nm@6000rpm. It has a wheel base of 1355mm and kerb weight is 150kgs. It has a ground clearance of 150mm. The engine has a support for single cylinder and the electrical specifications of Hero Honda Karizma R are 12V, 7.0 Ah and Digital - CDI (AMI - Advanced Microprocessor Ignition System). The Karizma is started by kick and self start. It has 5-speed constant mesh type transmission. A stronger multi-plate clutch is used to take care of the enhanced power and torque figures. The chassis of the motorbike is diamond shaped while the rear suspension is equipped with hydraulic shock absorber to ensure smooth riding even in bumpy terrain. It uses one down and 4 up gears and the handling of the bike is quite simple even for people with average height.

Acceleration

Hero Honda Karizma R speedometer view Picture Apart from breaking the 200cc barrier, the bike breaks fresh grounds in the acceleration front. 0 - 60 Kmph in 3.8 Seconds which is perhaps the best in the similar kind of bikes. Likewise 0-100 kmph in just 14.05 seconds and 0-400 kmph in just 18.79 seconds. Maximum Speed is 125.6 kmph. Braking on the Karizma is superb and it is designed to bring this bulky 150kg-bike and rider to rest from 60kph in 19.84 metres.

Fuel Efficiency

Hero Honda Karizma R oil tank view Picture You can get an average mileage of about 40 kmpl in city conditions and around 47 kmpl on highways . CV carburetor with a variable ignition system that alters timing based on engine power and throttle position. Its mid size fuel tank can keep 15 liters of petrol plus two litres reserve.

Colours

The stylish bike is available in four vibrant colours. You can opt from sport red, black, moon yellow and vibrant blue. The attractive colours give the bikini deadly looking. Available colours Are : Hero Honda Karizma R different colour palette view Picture Hero Honda Karizma R different colour palette view Picture Hero Honda Karizma R different colour palette view Picture Hero Honda Karizma R different colour palette view Picture Hero Honda Karizma R different colour palette view Picture

Brakes

Hero Honda Karizma R disk brake view Picture In view to provide gentle halting of the bike, the beast is provided with front disc brakes that is dia 276mm non-asbestos type. While rear brakes comes in internal expanding shoe type with dia 130mm non-asbestos type.

Suspension

Hero Honda Karizma R shocker view Picture Now look at the suspension in the motorbike. Nicely shaped front suspension is telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers and the rear one is 5 step adjustable type hydraulic shock absorbers with swing arm. That means you have five options to adjust the suspension for different roads. No doubt, the feature allow you to enjoy jerkfree riding experience.

Wheels and Tyres

Hero Honda Karizma R wheels and tyre view Picture The machine posses nice looking five-spoke die alloy wheels which support the balance and weight of bike. The tyres size are perfect with the specifications of 2.75X18-42 p (front) and 100/90-18-56 p (rear).

Wheel Base and Controlling

The wheelbase is quite awesome as it has 1335mm wheel base. The large wheelbase is responsible for stability and control in various road and weather conditions. Disc brakes and adjustable sock absorbers adds to the safety, control and smooth ride.

Comfortness

Hero Honda Karizma R Seet view Picture The tank with its sculpted knee recesses adds to the great biker feel as does the super saddle which makes the straddling posture so very inviting. Ride for the pillion is equally comfortable as the rear suspension is generally set perfectly for the average Indian pillion. Riding posture is a bit sporty but comfortable. Karizma R is relatively heavy and stable bike which is more due to long wheelbase that keeps it well planted to the ground even at high speeds.

Pros

The looks of the bike is sporty. In spite of high engine cc it gives fuel efficiency.

Cons

Hero Honda Karizma is not that good in its acceleration as compared to other high quality features

KARIZMA Review 2

“A car carries body but a bike carries soul”. I read this line several times but realised only after riding one of my dream bike- Hero Honda’s old war horse Karizma.

Hello everybody, I am Umesh Prasad Rout (UPR) from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Riding bike is one of my passion. By profession I am an assistant professor in an Engineering College of Bhubaneswar. This is my review of Hero Honda’s old but gold bike that introduced a new bike segment in India – The Karizma R. The name Karizma comes to mind first while talking about performance bikes in India.

My previous bike was HH Passion Plus, the most popular 100cc bike after Slendor. It is a stylish reliable bike of lower displacement but after 5 years of riding I felt that I need a bike of higher power and torque. Then I purchased Karizma (2010 model) as it fits well to my requirement. I had waited for two months to get my dream bike.
The initial riding experience was awesome. There was increase of 9.5bhp, 11Nm of torque and 126cc of displacement in comparision to PassionPlus. I felt like in heaven for the first few month of riding. My Karizma is now 18 month old and I have done 18000kms till now. I like to share my sweet and sour experience with the black beauty through this review.

Why Karizma?

Karizma looks exclusive and expensive among the bikes of its segment. It gives feeling of a real big bike having a long wheelbase of 1355mm and it is the longest (2125mm) bike among all 250cc and sub 250cc indian bikes (Ninja 250R-2085mm, CBR 250R-2032mm, p220-2035mm, R15-1970mm, ZMR-2110mm).
Karizma own my heart by its beauty. It the most good looking bike in 250cc and sub 250cc segment in india (personal view). Its comfort level is next to a car. Above all it is a VFM machine having good resale value.

Uniqueness of Karizma

  • Karizma has electric as well as kick start option. In cold morning kick start option is a kind of boon.
  • Two cable throttle is another unique feature which very few bikes have.
  • There is a small in-built hole in the exhaust pipe to drain out water.
  • The best looking half-fairing among all Indian bikes.
  • Only Indian bike to have dual tail lamp .

Styling

Though looks is a personal issue, in my view Karizma is an eye catcher despite of its age. It looks awesome in yellow color. The only bike in its segment that looks proportionate in every angle.

The fighter jet design, half fairing, engine under cowl and R lettering put Karizma in a different league among all bikes. The yellow dashboard, black visor, red suspension, golden exhaust pipe and dual tail lamp are the style elements in it.

Features

The dashboard is very well designed in Karizma. It consists of RPM meter, Speedo meter, neutral and high beam indicator, digital trip meter, digital clock, digital odometer and fuel indicator. The dash board look gorgeous with yellow back ground and it helps at night. The digital clock is very handy for me as while going to the office I am in a hurry and cannot look at the wrist watch every time.
The engine under cowl adds style and better aerodynamics. The MRF Zappers give the bike very good grip on roads. The butter smooth gearbox is a rider’s delight.

Rider Comfort

Being the best tourer, comfort is one of major strength in Karizma R. The riding posture is very comfortable. It absorbs all most everything whether it is pothole or humps. I have never felt any kind of discomfort in it. The comfort level almost like a car. I never felt any vibrations up to 110kmph.

Pillion Rider Comfort

A performance bike is not meant for pillion rider’s comfort. But Karizma has got a good and comfortable sitting posture for pillion rider in comparision to other’s bikes in its leauge. My advice is not to carry ladies as pillion rider because seat is too high and one sided sitting posture is not safe at high speeds.
The most pathetic experience in karizma for me was when my mother fell down from the bike while trying to accelerate quickly from a traffic post. She was not aware of the pick up of bike and hence not prepared for the drag. She fell in the highway and backside her head was struck on the road. Thank God, there was no injury and no problem later on.

Performance

Karizma is a proven performer. The 223cc engine generates 17bhp Power and 18.35Nm torque. The rock solid engine can run 24×7 without any stress. Acceleration of Karizma R is amazing though not the best in its segment. The adrenalin rush can be felt from second gear onwards. The power is well distributed in the whole rpm band.

The top speed I achieved is 130kmph (on Speedo). Karizma vibrates a little after 120kmph,but up to 115kmph it is butter smooth.Up to 110kmph it is quick, after that it takes time to accelerate. In 5th gear it denies to go beyond 8k rpm most of the time. It is capable of 115kmph in 4th gear.

Handling

Karizma handles well in any type of road condition (bumpy, dusty and wet). Though the long wheel base requires more turning radius, the cornering is quite well. The handling is equally good at higher speeds. The brake is not quite sharp but spongy. Though the rear one is drum, It works wonderfully. I have applied brake at 110+ kmph speed several times and it stopped within few seconds.
Karizma is a heavy bike (150kg). If one looses balance, the weight of bike will come in the arm and one need some muscle to handle the situation.

Fuel Efficiency

Performance bikes are not fuel efficient. Also fuel efficient bikes are not performance oriented. The mileage varies on riding style and speed. Karizma gives best mileage when driven in 4k-5k rpm in 5th gear. My Karizma gives 42kmpl in highway and 32kmpl in city. Overall I get 36kmpl. It not fair to expect much from a 223cc bike.

Accidents and Mishappening

No major accident in Karizma (thank God and HeroHonda). Once because of an autorickshaw’s sudden right turn I had to brake hard and as a result me and my bike fell down. The left indicator was broken and gear lever was bent.
The bike fell down twice from my hand due to loss of balance-once whlie trying to ride from right side and the other instance was while trying take a slow right turn with pillion rider. The worst happening was felling down of my mother as told earlier.

Maintenance

Karizma is very reliable and hence requires less maintenance. In 1.5year time I have changed the disc brake pads once in 11000Kms worth Rs 1125, headlight bulb worth Rs 90, one taillight bulb worth Rs15, type B throttle cable worth Rs 75, speedo meter inner cable worth Rs 22 and clutch cable of Rs71. In total Rs 1398 except engine oil. I have also changed the broken main stand free of cost under warranty.
Though Karizma spares are costly ,the genuine parts lasts long.

Strength

  • Highly reliable engine
  • Power packed performance
  • Hero Honda service network
  • Excellent ergonomics
  • Smooth gear shift
  • Sound braking system
  • Best for touring
  • Super refined engine
  • Good suspension offers hassle free riding
  • Stability at any speed is top class
  • Pretty grippy tyres

Weakness

  • Horn is same as 100cc bike
  • Head light is not suitable for highway riding.
  • Lack of tubeless tyre
  • No rear disc brake
  • Finding neutral is difficult while riding
  • Cold start problem

Karizma for Me

Karizma is not merely a bike for me. It is a source of confidence, smartness and entertainment for me. It is now one of my basic need. Also it has become one of my identity.

Conclusion

Karizma R is a versatile bike. My overall rating is 8/10. If you are looking for a reliable, smooth, comfortable performance bike with good resale value it is the bike you are looking for. Happy Riding.
